GMRR Day 5 - Vicksburg, MS to Greenville, MS
The link to today's route and ride statistics is here.Well, if the Natchez Trace Parkway was a bicyclist's dream, today was more of a bicyclist's nightmare. Many of the roads were either chip seal or just bad, which made for a very tough ride on the hands and shoulders. I felt like I had been beat up pretty good when I got in. To top things off, we had a headwind for much of the day, which made the flat terrain feel like going uphill. But enough of my whining. A bad day on the bike beats most other days for sure.
As I was heading out of Vicksburg, I noticed the train station off to my left. I thought it was a pretty classic old building. When I got the camera out to take a picture, I got the dreaded "change battery pack" message. Since the spare was in the van (and it turns out was dead anyway), I had to rely on my phone for the few photos I took for the day. Here is the Vicksburg train station.
We spent the day today in delta farm country. The area is very flat, and the soil is good from Mississippi flooding in the old days. There was corn coming up in a lot of the fields.
Many of the other fields were fairly freshly plowed, in readiness for what crop I do not know.
As you can see, these are not small time operations. For most of our 100 miles, this was pretty much the scenery. Not as exciting as some days, but good for the country. I did find an interesting home as we were going through an area called Lake Washington.
The consensus of the folks I have talked to was that it was a tough day today. Considering the route was essentially flat, this might have been surprising, but the combination of road conditions and headwind made it so. Hope we have tailwinds tomorrow. See you then.
